Harrison Lord Custom Framing Standard

Conservation Standard
Harrison Lord work to the conservation standard as set down by the Fine Art Trade Guild.
Objective
To visually enhance artwork and offer a high level of protection from physical and mechanical damage, airborne pollution and acids generated by framing materials, for approximately 20 years under normal conditions. Ideally frames should be examined by the framer or conservator every five years.
Suitable for
Collectable artwork that is to be kept for future generations, e.g. original paintings and limited edition prints of moderate to high value, as well as items of sentimental value. Customers will be advised that lifetimes given assume that artwork is not inherently unstable.
Window mount
A window mount is normally used to visually enhance the artwork and and this is made from Conservation board. Conservation mountboard at least 1100 micron thick and conforming to the Fine Art Trade Guild specifications is used.
Under mount
We use a barrier layer between the artwork and the back board; this is  made from Conservation mount board at least 1100 micron thick. The under mount is the same size as the window mount and hinged to it along the the longer side using a gummed conservation tape with a water-soluble adhesive.
Attaching artwork
The artwork is hinged to the under mount with T-hinges on the top edge with museum quality material. We do not make hinges from self-adhesive tape. Hinges are attached to the back of the artwork, not the front, and overlap onto the artwork the minimum amount necessary to give proper support.
Glazing
Float glass free from obvious blemishes and of appropriate thickness for the frame size is used. Glass with high UV protection should be considered.
Back board
The backboard is strong, rigid and flat to protect the artwork from damage.
Securing the frame
The frame back is secured firmly with framers' points. Flexible tabs are only used on request.
Hanging
Hanging fittings are supplied, please ask for advice on hanging.
Finish
The finished frame is checked for dust and dirt and the glass is cleaned and polished without smears. The back is sealed with  gummed-paper tape which is carefully applied. Pads or buffers are applied to the two lower corners.
Notes on framing fabric, canvas and objects
Fabric is squared as necessary. No process which may damage the fabric is used. It will be laced over a conservation-quality support or a similarly reversible method is used. Nylon tag guns are used for items of a coarse or open weave fabric or shirts etc to hold the item in place between conservation-quality boards.
